Frequently asked questions
What are the California Gateway Connector Projects?
The California Gateway Connector Projects are state-identified transmission upgrades in Northern California that include two new 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines and a new substation. The projects are designed to strengthen grid resiliency and advance California’s clean energy future.
Who is developing the projects?
CalGrid is a California-based transmission developer, owner, and operator focused on delivering the infrastructure needed to meet the state’s growing energy demand reliably and cost-effectively while strengthening grid resiliency.
Through a competitive solicitation process, CAISO selected CalGrid, a Viridon company, to finance, construct, own, operate, and maintain the California Gateway Connector Projects as the most cost-efficient solution for California electric customers.
The CalGrid and Viridon team has experience developing, permitting, and delivering more than 1,400 miles of transmission infrastructure across the country.
Why does California need the California Gateway Connector Projects?
Northern California faces long-standing transmission constraints and aging infrastructure that limit the movement of electricity.
The California Gateway Connector Projects will expand transmission capacity, improve grid resiliency, reinforce aging infrastructure, and support growing electricity demand. By creating new high-voltage connections between the North Coast and the broader electric grid, the projects will enhance energy resiliency for communities across the region and state.
How will the projects benefit California energy customers?
The California Gateway Connector Projects will benefit California energy customers by strengthening Northern California's transmission network, enhancing grid resiliency, and unlocking access to diverse, large-scale energy resources. The projects will help integrate new sources of generation and support California's growing energy needs
